  1. You might be thinking that “action” is a hard genre to narrow down when it comes to any form of interactive media, and you’d be right. At the very least, most video games – from first-person shooters to real-time RPGs – fall under the action banner in some shape or form. That's why putting together this list was hard; there are a select few games that made the honorable mentions section at the bottom of the page and many others that aren’t even referenced – a side effect of the immensity of the genre itself. Even so, these are the top 10 action titles that I’m excited to get my hands on in 202
  2. The Mass Effect trilogy remains one of the most incredible stories in gaming. The journey as Commander Shepard began with the first game, and from there, gamers were enthralled (but not indoctrinated) by the tale of uniting a galaxy at any cost. Ahead of the release of Mass Effect Legendary Edition, we sat down with character and environment director Kevin Meek from BioWare to talk a little more about the pioneering first game and how working on this remaster brought back the best kind of nostalgia. The first Mass Effect game had very different pacing than 2 or 3, and a large part of that
  3. Just last week we witnessed the return of Nintendo Directs, bringing announcements like Splatoon 3, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD, and Project Triangle Strategy. Now, Sony has announced the return of its own Direct-style streams, meaning fans can get ready for an all-new State of Play broadcast this Thursday. Before you get overly excited about receiving updates on anticipated, previously announced first-party titles like God of War, Horizon Forbidden West, or Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, the PlayStation Blog post detailing the broadcast indicates it leans more heavily into new ga
  4. When Final Fantasy XVI was first announced towards the end of 2020, I was almost positive that the game was a next-gen-enhanced continuation of Final Fantasy XIV’s MMO formula. The visuals were reminiscent of A Realm Reborn’s fantastical art direction and Creative Business Unit III’s involvement spoke for itself. However, the rest of the launch trailer disproved my original assumptions; Final Fantasy XVI is likely going to be a solo, narrative-focused experience similar to fan-favorite, classic Final Fantasy games. Producer Naoki Yoshida practically confirmed this in a recent radio show talk.
  5. The question "where is Dying Light 2" has been on many minds since the indefinite delay announcement back in January 2020, and now that same question is back following reports about the culture within Techland and a lack of direction for the choice-heavy sequel. In a report from The Gamer, Kirk McKeand spoke with numerous developers at Techland to gauge where the studio is at regarding the highly anticipated launch of Dying Light 2. What he found instead was disheartening picture including a lack of leadership, a lack of direction, and a demoralizing atmosphere. One developer even told the
  6. Mortal Kombat's colorful fighters, deep (read: ridiculous) lore, and over-the-top violence lends itself to film and TV better than most game franchises. Who doesn't want to watch a demonic hell ninja rip the heart out of a shape-shifting wizard? That's money baby, and Hollywood clearly agrees. The beloved franchise has a long history of spilling blood outside of the confines of video games with varying degrees of success, from the '90s films, to an animated series, to a few live-action shows – and I've watched them all. So with the new Mortal Kombat film bringing our favorite kombatants to
  7. Remember El Shaddai? The bizarre 2011 title blended a unique take on stylish action and a dreamlike aesthetic with a narrative heavily steeped in biblical lore. The cult classic has been trapped on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 for the last decade, but it’s getting a new lease on life with a move to PC (via Steam). There’s no release window for the port, but the official announcement says the game is coming "soon." El Shaddai's story follows Enoch, a scribe who tries to save humanity from a great flood by locating seven fallen angels. The story draws inspiration from the Book of Enoch, an ancie
  8. Ever since video games became successful, film and television adaptations have been pursued. Whether you're talking the Super Mario Bros. Super Show in 1989, the long-running Pokémon anime, or the upcoming Mortal Kombat movie, the results have been as varied as the games they've attempted to adapt. While Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and The Witcher season 2 are currently in the works, we now know the latest game to enter the live-action adaptation fray, and it's probably not what you've been expecting. While some fans pine for BioShock on the big screen or new episodic adventures in the Mass Effect un
  9. The Super Mario event is headed to Animal Crossing: New Horizons for players to enjoy and it brings with it a ton of unique ways for the two franchises to intertwine. Coins, Warp Pipes, costumes, and more are on the way, but some have been wondering exactly how the Warp Pipes will work in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, especially regarding in-island travel. While walking around your island is a fun pastime, sometimes you just have to get to Able Sisters super fast. We get it, we're not here to judge. The Warp Pipes addition to New Horizons will allow players to do just that, zipping around
  10. Wizards of the Coast today announced the impending arrival of Van Richten’s Guide to Ravenloft, coming to D&D players on May 18. Older Dungeons & Dragons players will need little introduction to the concept of Ravenloft; the setting saw its inception in an early AD&D adventure module from 1983, before a later boxed set released in 1990 for the second edition of the game. The setting had a much more recent appearance in the well-received Curse of Strahd adventure that released in 2016, but fans know there is much more than Strahd's Barovia to the sprawling horror landscape of Ravenl
  11. Hitman 3 launched last month and while we loved it, it certainly didn't have the smoothest launch. Between server issues, entitlements to past campaign content, and other bugs, developer IO Interactive had its work cut out for it in the immediate aftermath of launch. While many of the issues have been assuaged in the month since its January 23 release, IO Interactive has announced its first major post-launch patch that not only address various lingering issues, but adds more content. First up is the Tactical Turtleneck (pictured above), which is added as an unlockable suit for all Hitman 3 p
  12. The Xbox Games With Gold February 2021 lineup is still available for those interested in the freebies available this month. Still, for those looking forward to what's next, Microsoft has revealed what the Xbox Games With Gold March 2021 lineup looks like. Just like every month, March will offer a select few free titles for Xbox Live and Game Pass Ultimate members to enjoy. Whether you want to become a pirate or fight in the llama apocalypse, here are the free games on the way next month for Games With Gold. Xbox Games With Gold March 2021 free games The latest lineup doesn't pack quite th
  13. While Xbox has been bridging the gap between console and PC for years due to Microsoft's corporate umbrella, the PlayStation camp has largely stuck to its guns regarding its console-exclusive lineup. Like Sony's stance on backwards compatibility, it looks like it is changing its mind regarding a PC presence, something story-loving fans have already witnessed with the PC ports of Horizon Zero Dawn and Death Stranding. So what's next? Beginning with Days Gone, more PlayStation titles will be making the jump to PC, according to CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment Jim Ryan. In a recent interv
  14. After some playful banter on Twitter yesterday involving Tony Hawk, Nintendo, and Activision, the curtain has been pulled back to reveal that Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 is coming to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X in March, and Switch sometime this year. The title, which remakes the beloved Tony Hawk's Pro Skater and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 with modernized visuals, a soundtrack full of THPS songs old and new, online features, and an expanded skater roster, launched last year on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. Those who decide to go for the the new-gen versions of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1
  15. Sony has confirmed the return of PlayStation's Play At Home initiative, which is set to kick off at the start of next month to bring a wave of new free games and entertainment for fans to enjoy. The announcement began with a small reflection back on 2020 and the impact that the global pandemic had on many communities, including our own. It is due to these "historic times" that Sony wanted to give back to players, giving fans "something to look forward to and another reason to stay safely socially distanced" while efforts continue towards the goal of returning to some form of normalcy. To he
  16. It seems that there was much more behind the scenes of the development of Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2 because Paradox Interactive has decided to part ways with Hardsuit Labs, the studio developing the upcoming title. The change of hands this late in development has understandably caused a delay for the game itself and existing pre-orders have been canceled. The news was confirmed on the official Bloodlines 2 website after an extended stretch of time where news was at a standstill. Now the silence makes sense, though the publisher, Paradox, does confirm that the game is "still in
  17. Sony has a new, dedicated PS VR headset in development for PlayStation 5. The company made the surprise announcement today on the PlayStation Blog, providing a glimpse of the headset’s new features and improvements. Unfortunately, Sony didn’t share any images of the headset itself and confirmed that it will not be launching in 2021. The company only states that they’ve learned many lessons from PSVR on PS4, and that the new-gen headset will have improved resolution and field of view. It will also connect to the PS5 using a single-cord, eliminating the cumbersome processor box and multiple wi

  19. Hot off the heels of a canned remake of Goldeneye 007 getting leaked online comes another abandoned Rare project back from the digital graveyard. This time it’s Dinosaur Planet, an unreleased N64 game that eventually turned into Star Fox Adventures for GameCube. Although it’s not the first time fans have seen footage of the lost game in action, a group of video game preservationists have made it available to play. A quick history lesson is probably in order. Rare intended Dinosaur Planet to be its final game for the N64, following hits like Banjo-Kazooie and Diddy Kong Racing. The title wo
  20. Last year, fans of the beloved Tony Hawk's Pro Skater franchise finally had their prayers answers as developer Vicarious Visions released Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. The title brought the first two games forward with modernized visuals, new features, and a huge skater roster to become the first well-received Tony Hawk's Pro Skater game in more than a decade. Now, various prominent Twitter accounts seem to be teasing a possible Switch version of the well-liked, remade skating titles. It all started about 45 minutes ago when the man himself, Tony Hawk, twee
  21. There are numerous Dark Souls mods out there, whether you're looking for a curated new world, randomized encounters and loot drops that could have you facing off with multiple end-game bosses in just a few minutes, and more. Yesterday, Grimrukh and Meomaritus released a 18-minute preview of the upcoming Dark Souls: Nightfall, which you can watch below. In a nutshell, this mod includes new story, new combat system, new world, and a lot more. As is the case with most projects like this, there is no affiliation with Bandai Namco or From Software. You can see significant shifts from the standard
  22. Baldur's Gate 3 is still in Early Access (now with Druids) but that hasn't stopped fans from absolutely falling in love with Larian Studios' take on the Dungeons & Dragons-related tale. For those that have played the Early Access title, you're already familiar with the hauntingly beautiful Down by the River song heard in the game but one Baldur's Gate 3 cosplayer took that appreciation to an incredible level by covering it herself in full costume. Her name is Alina Gingertail and she has a ton of videos like the one below on her channel, including The Elder Scrolls franchise, The Witche
  23. Click to watch embedded media Pokémon is celebrating 25 glorious years and in my search of literally any reason to justify talking more about this franchise, I came across the cutest not-so-little phone charger I've ever seen. With this Pokémon phone charger, a criminally adorable Pichu will juice up that mobile device in the most precious way possible: with their squishable little cheeks! This creative take on phone charging comes courtesy of artist Nendo Yoshirin. The Pichu phone charging station is made out of clay and comes with a MagSafe charger in its right cheek. It's honestly so c
  24. We see a lot of "gender bends" of our favorite characters and the Slayer from the Doom franchise is no exception. With the help of skins, we've even made the killer of demons a unicorn, a return to his classic form, and even a purple...uh, pony. With the weird variety of different looks for our badass protagonist, having a female-facing Slayer wouldn't be much of a stretch. According to the director of Doom Eternal, Hugo Martin, that creative direction has crossed the team's minds. So why haven't we seen it yet? The answer is more thoughtful than you might think. The revelation of a possibl
  25. Some of the rarest Pokémon encounters you can have in the games revolve around shiny versions of the iconic Pocket Monsters. In the Pokémon Trading Card Game, that rule carries over. However, every so often, the TCG introduces an expansion that makes them just a tad more obtainable. We recently saw some shiny monsters appear in the Pokémon Sun & Moon – Shining Legends expansion, and now we're seeing that emphasis return in the latest Pokémon Trading Card Game expansion, Shining Fates. This new expansion brings more than 190 new cards, with more than 100 shiny Pokémon, and more than 30 Po
