Nintendo Helping Developers With Crossplay, Continuing Talks With Platform Holders

Recommended Posts

During Nintendo's recent investor meeting, the company's executive team was asked about crossplay initiatives, specifically about Fortnite and Minecraft.

Nintendo's outgoing president Tatsumi Kimishima was quick to point out that crossplay doesn't mean that Nintendo games on other platforms will ever be a thing, and in fact they definitely will not, but they are happy to support developers that want the Switch version of a game to play with others.

"Crossplay basically comes about from conversations between publishers and platform holders," said senior executive officer Susumu Tanaka. "We are inclined to do what we can to help publishers incorporate crossplay when that is what they want. The other parties involved also have a say in whether we are able to reach this outcome or not, so we will continue to discuss it with them."

The other parties presumably mean Microsoft, Sony, and possibly Valve, but most of that list plays ball on crossplay. Nintendo has not commented on the recent block that prevents Fortnite PS4 accounts from ever being used on Switch beyond Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime merely saying it is Sony's choice to make.

At the same meeting, Tanaka also mentioned that Nintendo is aiming for 20 - 30 indie titles a week on the Switch eShop.

I think Nintendo probably does see this as a useful dagger to jab at Sony with and a growing list of games that allow Switch crossplay with other platforms other than PS4 is beneficial even if it's on a granular level. From that perspective, it makes a lot of sense for them to work with publishers to make crossplay a reality for their games.
