Bungie Studios design director and Halo and Destiny universe co-creator Joseph Staten has left the company after 15 years, the studio announced today on its website.

"At Bungie, we consider ourselves lucky. Every day, we get to do what we love in an amazing place, alongside people we respect and admire. No one embodies that more than Joseph Staten," Bungie said in a statement.

"Few have contributed as much to our success. To that end, it is with no small degree of sadness that we say 'Godspeed' to more than just a Grizzled Ancient, but an old, dear friend. And it is with no small degree of delight and intrigue that we imagine what worlds he might take us to next."

In a statement of his own, Staten explained that he is leaving Bungie to "tackle new creative challenges," though these were not specified.

"After 15 great years at Bungie, from the battlefields of Myth to the mysteries of Halo and beyond, I'm leaving to tackle new creative challenges," Staten said. "While this may come as a surprise, fear not. It's been my pleasure building Destiny these past four years, and after the big reveal this summer, our hugely talented team is on track for greatness. I'll be cheering all of them, with all of you, when the game launches next year. Thank you for your support of me, and your continued support of Bungie. We couldn't have done it without you."

Staten is a prolific Halo writer, having written for every game in the series developed by Bungie. He also served as creative director for Peter Jackson's Halo film (which would later fall apart) and authored the New York Times bestseller Halo: Contact Harvest.

Destiny launches in 2014 for current- and next-generation consoles.

Apple denies paying EA to delay Plants vs. Zombies 2 on Android

    GameSpot
    By GameSpot,

Spokesperson for iPhone company says recent report of Apple paying "truckload of money" to have EA delay Android version of free-to-play game is "not true."

    Plantsvs_49882_thumb.jpg

Apple did not pay Electronic Arts a "truckload" of money to delay free-to-play game Plants vs. Zombies 2 on Android, a spokesperson told GameSpot sister site Giant Bomb today.

    Plantsvs_49882_embed.jpg

The spokesperson said no money was exchanged.

Apple's statement comes after Giant Bomb reported today that the Cupertino, California technology giant paid for Plants vs. Zombies 2 to be an iOS-exclusive at launch.

"Apple gave us a truckload of money to delay the Android version [of Plants vs Zombies 2]," EA Labels president Frank Gibeau reportedly said today during a town hall meeting.

This quote was confirmed to Giant Bomb by "several" sources who attended Gibeau's presentation today.

Giant Bomb contacted PopCap Games to confirm, but a spokesperson stated that, "we can't comment on internal meetings."

Plants vs. Zombies 2 launched in July as an iOS-exclusive and has been downloaded nearly 25 million times to date. The game is available on Android in China, where it is outselling the iOS version six-to-one, according to Gibeau.

The Android version of Plants vs. Zombies will be released across the world in a month or two, Gibeau said.

A week after EA Sports executive Andrew Wilson was promoted to the role of EA CEO, the Battlefield and Mass Effect publisher has shifted its leadership structure, according to multiple sources speaking with Polygon.

    EA1_33783_embed.jpg

EA Games Label executive vice president Patrick Soderlund will now see his responsibilities expanded, as he will take over as head of EA Sports, according to the report. Meanwhile, EA Labels president Frank Gibeau will reportedly henceforth run EA's mobile group.

In addition to leading EA's mobile business, Gibeau will take over as head of EA Origin, the position Wilson held--along with his post at EA Sports--prior to his promotion.

The information was leaked out of a company-wide "town hall" meeting today at EA. The company has not confirmed the reported leadership changes.

Wilson replaced John Riccitiello as EA's top executive last week, after the position was vacant for a period of six months. Wilson will receive an annual salary of $800,000 in his new post, while executive chairman Larry Probst will remain onboard during the transition and continue to receive a $1.03 million compensation package.

Gamers looking to take the music from open-world game Grand Theft Auto V with them on the go are in luck, as Rockstar Games today released The Music of Grand Theft Auto V on iTunes.

    MusicOf_65529_embed.jpg

The Music of Grand Theft Auto V is a trio of separate albums from the game. Each sells for $10 individually or as a full compilation for $25.

Volume 1: Original Music includes songs created specifically for the game from artists like Wavves, Twin Shadow and Tyler, and The Chain Gang of 1974.

GTAV was the first entry in the series to feature an original score. Gamers can now take it with them through Volume 2: The Score, which was composed in collaboration between Tangerine Dream, Woody Jackson, and hip hop producers The Alchemist and Oh No.

For the purposes of Volume 2: The Score, Rockstar Games said the stems of the game's interactive score were layered, mixed, and arranged into an album of songs by producer DJ Shadow.

Finally, Volume 3: The Soundtrack features a selection of songs spanning the game's 17 in-game radio stations. Tracks from Bootsy Collins, Flying Lotus, Bob Seger, Jai Paul, Toro y Moi, and Waylon Jennings are included.

GTAV launched last week and generated $1 billion in global retail sales in three days, faster than any other entertainment property in history. For more, check out GameSpot's review.

DICE defends timing of Battlefield 4 beta

    GameSpot
    By GameSpot,

Executive producer Patrick Bach says even though the beta is "quite late," the developer still has time to listen to feedback and implement changes in final game.

    BF41_62643_thumb.jpg

The Battlefield 4 beta starts next week, less than a month before the game ships for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. Despite the short time between beta and release, developer DICE believes it has time to implement changes in the final game based on feedback from the beta.

    BF41_62643_embed.jpg

"Even if we're doing [a beta] quite late, we still have the opportunity to do some tweaks," executive producer Patrick Bach said in a new video (below). "And of course we want to get feedback not only from the beta, but also from game when it's out on the market. We have a history of following up with the game for months and months after it's been released. So to us, it's an ongoing service."

Battlefield 4 is also coming to next-generation consoles the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 as launch titles for those platforms in November. Since these machines won't be available to the public ahead of launch, DICE can't hold beta testing period specific to these platforms.

Bach acknowledged that this is a less-than-optimal scenario, but explained that some of the general feedback from the current-generation console and PC betas can be carried forward to the Xbox One and PS4 versions of Battlefield 4.

"That's of course a problem that we cannot solve," Bach said. "We wish people had the next-gen consoles earlier because then they could participate in the beta as well. But in general, we are collecting feedback from both the current-gen consoles and the PC beta and applying all that data and information onto the next-gen consoles."

Bach also said in the video that Battlefield 4 game updates for the Xbox One and PS4 versions can be downloaded automatically while the systems are in low-power states, if users enable this setting. "We can just push it out to them," he said.

The Battlefield 4 beta features the Siege of Shanghai map in Conquest or Domination mode. New features and elements like Levolution and Amphibious Assault will be featured in the beta.

Gamers who preorder the Battlefield 4 PC Digital Deluxe Edition, Battlefield 3 Premium members, and owners of Medal of Honor: Warfighter Limited or Digital Deluxe Edition can begin playing on October 1.

On October 4, the Battlefield 4 beta will be opened to all Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC players.
